Seven Grand – San Diego
3054 University Ave.
San Diego, CA 92104
Whiskey bar, meets game lodge, meets man cave pool room. I must be in Jackson Hole, Bozeman, maybe Telluride? No, try San Diego’s hip North Park area, a community teeming with craft beer bars, hole in the wall food establishments of every kind and a large contingent of locals making up the nighttime crowd. Seven Grand is fairly quietly stashed in a quiet subdued storefront with only the neon sign over the doorway to indicate its presence.
Seven Grand in San Diego is actually 2 bars in one building. Seven Grand is upfront with a few hundred whiskeys on the shelves and the requisite ladder for access to higher shelves, in combination with an adjoining space with pool tables and heads of deer, bear, etc. The staff is fairly knowledgeable, but when it came to going off menu or looking for some creativity they were a bit lacking. It is fairly obvious by the division of the house, that the front is for those who just want to come in and have a whiskey or two, while playing pool, listening to music or hanging out with friends. In the back of the house is a spot called Bar Three Piece, it is a speakeasy reproduction, that has been done very well, with a large bar, deep higher end whiskey collections, Prohibition period furnishings and a small stage area for music performances. At Bar Three Piece you will also find highly knowledgeable and skilled bartenders, doing private tastings, crafting outstanding cocktails and imparting some of their extensive whiskey knowledge to the well-heeled patrons. A locker for those who wish to purchase special or limited release whiskeys and have them available for future visits is available and on display. This is intended to be the enclave for the whiskey aficionado who is after some of the select or rare offerings that are available.
If you are just looking for a place to grab a quick cocktail or craft whiskey the main room works quite well, but if it is, refinement, an evening of exploring the intricacies of Buffalo Trace’s Special Cask Collection, or a private party, then Bar Three Piece is the spot. Of course, the ultimate beauty is that you can have either or both.
Combined they create a strong and quality place to enjoy your favorite whiskey, whatever it may be and a proper environment for the occasion.
For San Diego locals looking to expand their whiskey knowledge and experience inquire about the Seven Grand Whiskey Society San Diego which has regular events offering unique tastings and featuring Brand Ambassadors and Distillers discussing their products and other things – Whiskey.
